Escape the UK

Skint, fed up, done with it? You can actually leave. Here's how — visas, costs, what you need to save, and what happens to your benefits.

Australia — The Easiest Way Out

Age 18–35. Up to 3 years. No sponsor needed. UK citizens get the best deal.

Live with a family. Free room. Free food (3 meals a day). Earn ~A$200-350/week. Everything you earn is basically profit. Your flatmate did this. It works.

🦘Working Holiday Visa (417)

The classic. Work for any employer up to 6 months at a time. Travel. Stay up to 3 years with the UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement — no farm work required anymore.

Visa cost: A$670 (~£342) Age: 18–35 Need savings: A$5,000 (~£2,500) UK citizens: 3 year option Process time: 2–4 weeks

What Happens to Your Benefits

The bit everyone worries about. Honest answers only.

Universal Credit

Stops. UC is means-tested and residence-based. It stops the day you leave the UK. Close your claim properly before you go — don't ghost the DWP or you'll have an overpayment debt when you come back.

PIP / DLA (Disability Benefits)

Non-means-tested. You can continue receiving PIP for up to 13 weeks abroad. Australia has a reciprocal social security agreement with the UK — meaning some benefits can continue longer. Check GOV.UK or call PIP directly before making plans. Don't assume either way.

GOV.UK — Benefits Abroad

NHS

Australia has a reciprocal healthcare agreement (Medicare). You get access to Australian public hospitals and bulk-billed GPs. Get a Medicare card on arrival. It's free for UK citizens.

Coming Back

You can come back and reclaim UC. There's a Habitual Residence Test — you'll need to demonstrate you're back properly. Give it a few weeks of being back before applying. Your National Insurance record is unaffected by time abroad.
