Nobody teaches you this at school. One day you'll need a flat, a mortgage, a car on finance. Your credit file decides all of it. Here's exactly what to do — free, no jargon, no scams.
You might not need credit today. But one day you will — and your file will already be built or not. Start now.
Landlords and mortgage lenders credit-check you. A thin or bad file = rejection. A good file = options. Every month you ignore this is a month of history you're not building.
Most 0% car finance deals and monthly phone contracts require a credit check. Bad file = pay more upfront or get refused. Good file = better deals.
People with no credit history turn to doorstep lenders, payday loans, and loan sharks because banks won't touch them. Build credit now so you never have to go near those people.
Electoral register, address history, accounts, missed payments, defaults, CCJs. Three agencies hold your data — Experian, Equifax, TransUnion. They don't always match. Check all three.
All three services below are free. Check all three — they hold different data and don't always agree.
The biggest credit agency in the UK. Free account gives you your Experian score and report. Check it, read every line, dispute anything wrong.
Check Experian Free →Free forever, no card needed. Shows your TransUnion file. Different data from Experian — check both. Also shows what's dragging your score down.
Check Credit Karma Free →Free forever. Shows your Equifax file and score. Sends weekly updates. Good for tracking improvements over time. All three free = full picture.
Check Clearscore Free →Errors on your file are more common than you think — wrong address, old debt that's been paid, someone else's default. You can legally dispute and remove them. Do it.
These cost nothing and some will boost your score immediately. No excuses — do every single one.
These cards exist for people with thin or bad credit history. Use them correctly and they build your file every month. Use them wrong and they make things worse.
One of the most accessible credit builder cards in the UK. Designed for people rebuilding credit. Start with a small limit, pay in full every month, watch your score grow. APR is high — never carry a balance.
See Aqua Card →Another well-known credit builder. Low limit to start, increases with good behaviour. Reports to all three agencies monthly. Use for one small purchase, pay in full.
See Capital One →Tesco's credit builder option — reports monthly. Small limit. Only use if you can guarantee you'll pay in full every month via direct debit.
See Tesco Card →Loqbox is a clever free tool — you commit to saving a small amount monthly (as low as £20), it reports this as credit activity, and releases your savings at the end. Builds credit with no debt risk.
Try Loqbox Free →A bank account with a small overdraft is a foundation. Even if you never use the overdraft — having it and not using it helps your file.
Both do a soft check only — no hard search on your file. You get a full UK bank account, sort code and account number. Once you've used it well for 6 months, apply to upgrade to one with an arranged overdraft.
Once you have a bank account history, apply for a small arranged overdraft — £100 to £250. Don't use it. Having an unused arranged overdraft shows lenders you can be trusted with credit. It's a signal, not a spending tool.
Set up your direct debits through your main account — rent (via Credit Ladder), energy, broadband, phone. Regular payments in and out tell lenders you're reliable. Stability on an account is worth more than a high score with no history.
Revolut is one of the best free accounts in the UK. Instant spending notifications, built-in budgeting, no fees abroad, and you can hold multiple currencies. Great as a second account alongside your main bank. Helps you track exactly where money is going — essential when you're rebuilding.
Open Revolut Free →Get PayPal Credit approved (free, 2 mins inside PayPal). Add your Revolut account to PayPal Wallet. Send money to a trusted friend or family member using PayPal Credit — they send it straight back to your PayPal balance. Withdraw it to Revolut. You now have cash, interest-free, on PayPal's tab. Pay it back before the statement date and it costs you nothing. This is a short-term bridge — use it before your bank DD clears, not as spending money.

✅ Yes — if income is coming in, you can repay in full within a few weeks, no existing balance.
❌ No — if you're already in debt, spending on takeaways/treats you can't afford, or won't pay it off. At 23.9% APR it becomes expensive fast. Go to Break the Cycle instead.
Every time you buy insurance, broadband, a SIM, or pretty much anything online — you can get cashback. TopCashback is free to join and pays out real money, not points. Stack it with comparison sites for maximum saving.
💰 Join Free →Credit history length matters hugely. A 3-year-old account with consistent payments beats a new account every time. Don't close your oldest account. Don't keep switching banks. Settle in one place and let time do the work.
Some of these are obvious. Some aren't. All of them will damage your file for years.
Even if you repay them on time, having a payday loan on your file tells mortgage lenders you were in financial difficulty. Many lenders auto-reject anyone who has used payday loans in the last 2–3 years. Avoid entirely.
One missed payment stays on your file for 6 years. Set up direct debits for the minimum on everything — even if you plan to pay more manually. The DD is a safety net.
Each hard search leaves a mark. Applying for 5 credit cards in a week looks desperate. Use eligibility checkers first — they use soft searches and don't affect your score.
"We can fix your credit in 30 days for £299." No they can't. Legitimate errors can be removed free — you do it yourself via the credit agencies. Anyone charging to "fix" your credit file is a scam.
This is the long game. Every step you take now is a step toward owning. It takes years — so start the clock today.
