UK Benefits Guide: What You Are Entitled To On Low Income
Can I get help with energy bills if I am on Universal Credit?
Yes. If you are on Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, ESA, or JSA, you may be eligible for the Warm Home Discount โ a ยฃ150 reduction on your energy bill. All six major UK energy suppliers (British Gas, EDF, E.ON, Octopus, OVO, Scottish Power) must offer social tariffs to benefit claimants. Call your supplier and say: "I am on [benefit name], do you have a social tariff?" You could save ยฃ100โยฃ300 per year.
How do I find a food bank near me in the UK?
The Trussell Trust runs over 1,300 food banks across the UK. You need a referral voucher, which your GP, Citizens Advice Bureau, or JobCentre can issue for free. Citizens Advice can also issue fuel vouchers up to 3 times in any 6-month period. Community pantries โ which require no referral, just a ยฃ3โ5 weekly membership โ operate at 500+ locations across the UK in 2026.
What benefits am I entitled to on a low income in the UK?
An estimated ยฃ19 billion in UK benefits goes unclaimed every year. People on low incomes may be entitled to: Universal Credit, Council Tax Reduction, Housing Benefit or Local Housing Allowance, free NHS prescriptions, free NHS dental treatment, PIP (Personal Independence Payment) if disabled, and the Warm Home Discount on energy bills. Use entitledto.co.uk or turn2us.org.uk to check your entitlement free in 10 minutes.
What happens to my Universal Credit payment on a bank holiday?
When a Universal Credit or DWP payment date falls on a bank holiday, you are paid on the last working day before the bank holiday. For example, if payment is due on Easter Monday (6 April 2026), it is paid on Thursday 2 April 2026. If your payment does not arrive, call DWP Universal Credit on 0800 328 5644 (free, Monday to Friday 8amโ6pm).
How do I get a CAB fuel voucher?
Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) can issue fuel vouchers for gas and electricity bills. You can request these up to 3 times within any 6-month period. Most fuel vouchers are redeemable at Post Offices or PayPoint locations and can be used to top up prepayment meters. Visit your local Citizens Advice or call 0800 144 8848.
What is the ECO4 scheme and am I eligible?
The ECO4 scheme provides free home insulation, boiler replacements, and energy efficiency upgrades for households on qualifying benefits. Eligible benefits include Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, ESA, JSA, Child Tax Credit, and Working Tax Credit. Apply through your energy supplier or check gov.uk/energy-grants-calculator.

๐ Biggest Struggle
Food Costs
Food prices have shot up and benefits haven't kept up. Here's how people across the UK are actually eating well on almost nothing.
๐
Plan your meals weekly
Write a meal plan before you shop. Buy only what you need โ no waste, no expensive last-minute shops.
๐
Shop Aldi first
Aldi is consistently cheapest in the UK. Main shop there, small top-ups elsewhere only if needed.
๐ณ
Cook from scratch
Batch cooking saves time and money. Rice, pasta, lentils, eggs, tinned tomatoes โ cheap, filling, nutritious.
๐ท๏ธ
Yellow sticker times
Sunday nights especially great for reduced items. Learn your local store's markdown times and plan around them.
๐
Make your own lunch
A packed lunch saves ยฃ5โยฃ8 a day. Over a month that's over ยฃ100 back in your pocket โ every single week.
๐ Community Pantries โ Cheap Food, No Referral
Community pantries are different to food banks. You don't need a referral โ anyone can join for a small membership fee (usually ยฃ3โ5/week) and shop for ยฃ15โ25 worth of food each week. No voucher, no crisis needed. Just show up. There are 500+ across the UK in 2026.
Unlike food banks which provide emergency parcels, pantries let you choose your own food from a real shop โ more dignity, more choice, more regularity.
No referral neededยฃ3โ5 membership/weekChoose your own food500+ UK locations
Sounds obvious โ it works. A full stomach means you stick to the list and spend far less. Every penny counts.
๐๏ธ Too Good To Go โ Grab Surplus Food Bags
Grab surplus food bags from local restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets for a fraction of the price. Surprise bags typically cost ยฃ2โยฃ5 and save perfectly good food from being binned.

There is absolutely no shame in using a food bank. The Trussell Trust runs over 1,300 food bank centres across the UK. You'll need a referral voucher โ your GP, Citizens Advice, social worker, or JobCentre can all issue one.
Over 1,300 UK locationsReferral via GP or Citizens Advice3 days emergency food
Hot meals, community fridges, food banks that come to you โ these exist in most towns and cities. No shame, no judgment. They're here because people care.
๐ก Citizens Advice = Food Bank Referrals
You don't have to wait to see a GP. Citizens Advice Bureau can issue food bank referral vouchers directly โ walk in, call, or use their website. They can also issue CAB fuel vouchers (up to 3 times in 6 months). One visit, multiple types of help.
๐ Hot Meals & Community Food โ Free
๐ฅฃ
Salvation Army โ Free Hot Meals
Salvation Army centres across the UK provide free hot meals, drop-in lunches, and food parcels. No referral needed in most locations โ just walk in. Completely free, completely welcoming.
Most towns have churches or community centres running free or pay-what-you-can lunch clubs, breakfast clubs, and soup kitchens. Search "free hot meal [your town]" or ask at Citizens Advice for your local options.
โ
Community Cafes โ Pay What You Can
Pay-what-you-can cafes exist across the UK where you eat a proper meal and pay whatever you can afford โ even nothing. Search "social supermarket [your town]" or "community cafe near me" to find one.
๐ก๏ธ
Warm Spaces โ Free Warmth & Food
The Warm Spaces network provides free warm places with drinks, food, and company during colder months โ libraries, community centres, churches. Visit the link to find one near you.
Libraries are free, warm, and welcoming. Many now run free food events, breakfast clubs for families, and hot drink programmes. Completely free to use โ no card needed just to go in and sit.
๐ฆ Food Banks & Services That Deliver
๐
FareShare โ Surplus Food Redistribution
FareShare redistributes surplus food from supermarkets and food businesses to community groups, charities, and frontline services across the UK. Many local groups receive FareShare food and deliver food parcels to people who can't travel. Ask your local food bank or Citizens Advice if delivery is available in your area.
If you're over 65 or caring for someone older, Age UK runs meal delivery services and food support in many areas. Completely free for those who need it โ call your local Age UK branch to ask what's available near you.
Community Fridges are shared public fridges stocked with surplus food that anyone can take, free of charge. Over 300 locations across the UK. No referral, no registration โ just go and take what you need.
OLIO connects neighbours and local shops to share food (and household items) that would otherwise go to waste. Browse free items near you โ fresh food, tinned goods, and more. Completely free to use.
Every area has its own patchwork of local food support โ council schemes, faith group kitchens, community charity deliveries โ that never make it onto national lists. Here is how to find what exists in your specific area:
Feeding Britain's map โ interactive map of food aid across the UK by postcode.
sufra.org.uk Food Finder โ covers London and expanding nationally.
Your council's website โ search "[your council] food support 2026" โ many councils updated their directories in early 2026.
Ask at school โ if you have children, schools often know about local schemes parents don't.
Social supermarkets (like "Nifty's" and local council-run schemes) let people referred by a support worker shop for hugely discounted food โ typically ยฃ3โยฃ5 for a full bag. Ask Citizens Advice or your GP whether there's one in your area.
๐ก Can't travel? Ask directly. Many food banks will make home deliveries for people who are elderly, disabled, or have young children and genuinely can't get to them. Just call your nearest food bank and ask โ the worst they can say is no, but many will help.

โก Secret Energy Tricks
Gas & Electric
Most people on benefits don't know these tricks exist. They do. Use them โ they are free money and free help that's yours by right.
๐ก Did You Know? CAB Fuel Vouchers Can Be Redeemed at the Post Office
Citizens Advice and some local councils issue fuel vouchers or crisis support vouchers under the Household Support Fund. These are redeemable at Post Offices and PayPoint locations โ some can be used to top up your prepayment meter, and certain council-issued vouchers can be exchanged for cash or essential goods directly at the Post Office counter.
Ask Citizens Advice specifically: "Can I get a fuel voucher I can take to the Post Office?" โ You're allowed to ask up to 3 times within any 6-month period. Most people never know this exists.
๐๏ธ
CAB Fuel Vouchers
Citizens Advice Bureau can provide fuel vouchers for gas and electric bills โ up to 3 times within any 6-month period. Almost nobody knows this. Go to your local CAB or call and ask specifically about fuel vouchers. Don't be embarrassed โ it's what they're there for.

Renting on Universal Credit
UC-friendly landlords do exist โ they are on Rightmove right now. Keep searching, keep calling. When you find one, move fast โ sometimes you need to be ready to go in days. When you call, lead with affordability and references, not benefits. Ask your council about their free deposit guarantee scheme โ many will act as guarantor or provide a bond so you don't need cash upfront. Rentguarantor and Housing Hand offer paid guarantor services if needed. Some areas also have interest-free move-in loans through the council or local charities. Ask your work coach too โ the Flexible Support Fund can cover deposits in some cases.
📍 Search Rightmove โ UC-friendly landlords are out there
📦
Moving House on Benefits
They don't tell you this stuff โ but it exists. If you're moving, ring your council and ask specifically for the Household Support Fund โ it can pay for furniture, white goods, bedding, and kitchen basics. Many councils won't volunteer this information, so you have to ask. Charities and food banks also give away free white goods โ fridges, washing machines, cookers. Ask at your local food bank or search Freecycle and Facebook Marketplace (free section). For move costs: UC claimants can apply for a Budgeting Advance (repaid through future payments); legacy benefits use a Budgeting Loan. Ask your work coach about the Flexible Support Fund for van hire and one-off costs. Council may also offer a Discretionary Housing Payment to cover deposit gaps. And if you've managed to save anything โ even a small amount โ that can move fast when the right place comes up.
📣 Ask your council: “Can I access the Household Support Fund?”

Facing Homelessness
Contact your council today โ they have a legal duty to help if you're threatened with homelessness within 56 days. You can find a new place and move in a single day โ UC-friendly landlords are on Rightmove right now, and councils offer free deposit bonds and guarantor schemes so you don't need cash upfront. Ask your work coach about the Flexible Support Fund for emergency move costs. Crisis (crisis.org.uk) runs 365 days a year. Note: Shelter works better for some than others โ men especially may get more help directly from the council or YMCA. Struggling with addiction? Going through rehab opens doors โ a key worker assigned after treatment can help secure housing directly. You are not alone.

Uber One โ Worth It or Not?
Tom's take ยท April 2025
I got Uber One and honestly it depends on how you use it. The taxi discounts are the best bit โ if you can wait a bit longer and take the slower cheaper option, it genuinely saves money. Worth it just for that.
The food side is trickier. Uber Eats for one person is expensive regardless โ the subscription doesn't fix that. Good if you're a big family and ordering a lot, less useful solo. The 50% off veg and fruit on Mondays sounds great but can be a false economy if you end up buying things just because they're discounted.
Just Eat discounts are also often a false economy โ I've seen people spend more chasing a deal. The McDonald's app offers though? Those are genuinely good.
My tip: don't just use Uber โ Bolt, FREE NOW, and local taxi firms all have their own app deals and discount codes. Stack them. Use whichever is cheapest for that journey. Don't be loyal to one app when others will pay you to switch.
๐ก Uber One = yes for taxis, maybe for food depending on household size

The Smartest Homeless Guy I Ever Saw
Tom's take ยท London
We were queuing outside a club in London. This guy wasn't begging, wasn't hassling anyone. He was selling chocolates. 50p each. Nobody refuses a chocolate for 50p. We bought four. ยฃ2. He moved down the queue. Everyone bought one.
Think about that. A busy Friday night queue outside a club โ 200 people easy. Even if half say yes, that's ยฃ50 in an hour. Some nights that's ยฃ100+. Save that for a few weeks and you've got a deposit and first month's rent. Not a handout โ a business.
Same outside pubs โ buskers with a guitar get pound coins all night from drunk people who love a song. One guy we saw just asked politely: "You guys drinking tonight? Any chance of a pound for a drink?" He was friendly, no pressure, had a laugh with us. We gave him ยฃ2. He went inside. No drama.
There's even a Facebook group where people are honest about needing money for booze or drugs โ and instead of abuse, they get helped. Honesty works better than you'd think.
The point isn't "just hustle harder." It's that dignity + a bit of creativity goes a long way. People want to give money โ they just need a reason that doesn't make them feel awkward. Give them one.
๐ซ Sell something. Ask nicely. People say yes more than you think.
